One bucket, two very different business models. Regulated utilities (Duke, Southern, Dominion, PSEG, Entergy) earn a government-set return on the grid they build; they are slow, defensive and rate-sensitive — bond-like stocks funding big capital programs. Independent power producers (Vistra, NRG, Talen) sell electricity at market prices, so tightening power markets flow straight into their earnings — which is why the IPPs re-rated violently when data-center demand met a grid short on capacity, while the regulated names barely moved. Know which model you own before reading a chart here: the IPPs trade like growth stocks with commodity torque, the utilities like interest-rate instruments with a capex story.
